Mr. Gandolfini - You Will Be Missed Around These Parts...

The End of Valverde Watch

I guess I don't see the point any more in tracking Tigers' closer Jose Valverde's every move.  I thought it was going to be a great story - after his meltdown last year he returns to the Tigers and actually gets the job done, they win a championship, blah blah blah.  But after last night's game I am through, and I trust the Tigers are through with him ASAP.  In case you missed it, Jose came in last night with Detroit down by six "just to work out some kinks".  He gave up back to back singles, then a double, then a home run, and the Tigers were down by 10.  Though, to be fair, he only allowed one more hit the rest of the inning.  So, farewell Valverde Watch, you did serve a purpose for a time, and I'll never forget you, Old Friend, never...

Brief Commentary on "A Boy Named Sue" by Shel Silverstein

Look, I like Shel as much as the next guy, and maybe it's just me, but if Sue was really that upset, why didn't he go ahead and change his fucking name?

Benoit, S (4)

When Joaquin Benoit pitches the 9th in a save situation and you feel "somewhat comfortable" with his presence on the hill (16 HR allowed in about 60 innings last year), you really get a crystalline perspective on your feelings regarding one Mr. Jose Valverde...

Valverde Watch

Ah, a day without a Jose Valverde appearance in a Tiger game is like a day without, well, sunshine, I guess...

Last night, he came in to a 4-0 game in the 9th and immediately walked the first guy.  Then, he got a double play, then hit a batter.  Then a strikeout.  Hey, what's two base runners per innings pitched for your closer, you know?

This from the ESPN blurb on last night's game - "It's great for me and great for my teammates to be on the mound and have my confidence again," said Valverde, who allowed 10 hits, seven runs and five homers over his previous six appearances while blowing two of his five save opportunities.

(The bolding is mine, but then you likely knew that...)

And yet another home run allowed by the Tiger closer, this time with two outs and two strikes on the batter.  He is, simply, not the answer to any question I am asking...

Original Art By Danielle McArthur, Untitled...

Encaustic on Japanese paper, 8 x 6.5 inches.

She made this for me in 2007 or 2008 when we were still living in San Francisco, but it became misplaced in the move to Seattle.  However, now, it's framed and up on the wall where it belongs, with all the other crosses.  Wouldn't have it any other way, really...

No Valverde this afternoon as he had pitched three days in a row.  Personally I'm happy with a little closer variety out of the bullpen, especially this particular bullpen with that particular closer...

This was Infection By Light's introduction to Ms. DeMent's music; it may as well be our theme song...

"Some say they're going to a place called Glory and I ain't sayin' it ain't a fact/
But I've heard that I'm on the road to Purgatory and I don't like the sound of that/
Cause I believe in love and to live my life accordingly/
But I choose to let the mystery be."

Valverde Watch

So fresh off his 1-2-3 save two nights ago, Jose V came into a game last night in a non-save situation (a 4 run lead) and proceeded to give up three hits (two of them homers) and two runs.  Which means in his last three outings he's allowed four home runs, something you ALWAYS want to see in your closer.  Me, I'm just happy to know he's worked himself into post-season form...
